At least 13 passengers killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
